Item details

The custom of hanging an evergreen wreath at Christmas originates in Ancient Rome. As part of the New Year celebrations presents were given, usually branches of evergreens. These were called “strenae” after the Goddess of Health, Strenia and they were displayed on doors to bring good health to the household. To make them more attractive, it became tradition to bend these branches into a ring or wreath.

This pattern is worked in rows and I use abbreviations according to US crochet language. I can provide the pattern in UK crochet language if preferred, please just contact me.

The finished ivy leaf is 2.5” (6cm) in length. This along with some holly and mistletoe could make a perfect Christmas wreath but the ivy could also be used as a brooch, to embellish bags or simply as a decoration.

Tools Needed:
2.5mm crochet hook
yarn needle

Yarn Needed:
4 ply/fingering weight cotton yarn in green

If you need any help or advice please feel free to contact me.

This pattern is for personal use only.
