Item details

A lot of people have asked about lettering for illusion knitting so here are ten alphabets for you to use in your illusion knitting projects.

The pattern includes charts for all the letters and instructions for how to use them.

Fancy letters need to be very large to fit in the amount of detail needed so these are all fairly plain. The smallest alphabet is about 2” tall, when knitted in DK yarn. Others are up to about 5”.

Some of the alphabets are designed to be viewed from below, which would be suitable for an afghan, or (if used upside down) could be used on the front of a child’s sweater for him to look down on. Others are to be seen from the side and could be used on a wall-hanging or the back of a sweater.

Illusion knitting works to roughly the same gauge as garter stitch so you can work out the size the letters will be in your chosen yarn.

All letters are printed individually on the charts. You can create your own words in various ways.
* If you have the computer skills, you may be able to paste the letters you need into a drawing program.
* Print out the pages, cut out the letters you need and stick them together.
* Use squared paper and copy the charts to colour in the letters you need.

The alphabets are:
* One stitch wide; Lower case; Viewed from below
* One stitch wide; Upper case; Viewed from below
* Two stitches wide; Lower case; Viewed from below
* Two stitches wide; Upper case; Viewed from below
* Small; Upper case
* Chunky; Upper case
* One stitch wide; Lower case; Viewed from the side
* One stitch wide; Upper case; Viewed from the side
* Two stitches wide; Lower case; Viewed from the side
* Two stitches wide; Upper case; Viewed from the side

The first photograph shows the single stitch wide and two stitch wide alphabets. The second photograph shows the same two when viewed from directly in front.

Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth are leading experts in illusion knitting, having revolutionised the charting methods so that you can create complex pictures from very simple patterns.

    Great patterns, liked that the availability of having two different letter thicknesses. The instructions on how to knit them were a bit difficult to understand, but I got through it on the fourth or fifth try.
