Item details

This Buddha carved bone textured 37mm bead features the head of the great spiritual teacher with his face in a typically serene pose of meditation.

I had a small batch of these beads made for me in Bali where crafting beautiful ornaments and jewelry pieces from animal bone is a time-honoured tradition.

Each artisan-carved bead has been made with care and attention to detail and, as you can see from the photos, there's nothing remotely machine made about them. Each face is ever so slightly different from the others.

The beads are quite flat but their tactile quality is sure to have the wearer thumbing them like a prayer bead.

They're ideally suited to jewelry for those who practise yoga and meditation but are sure to have universal appeal.

Bone is a sturdy and versatile material that is durable enough to produce a treasured heirloom. Worn against the skin over time, it will absorb the natural oils from your body and turn a golden colour.

Please note that this listing is for one piece only.

Bali is the biggest Hindu outpost outside of India but it's a hybrid form of the religion that incorporates elements of Buddhism, animism, and even Chinese Confucianism.

This religion is practised by more than 90 percent of Balinese as well as some residents of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Lombok, the little island to Bali's east.

Together they represent only about 3 per cent of the population of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation state.

What might not be so widely known is that in Java, once predominantly Hindu, a substantial number of Muslims follow a non-orthodox, Hindu-influenced form of Islam known as Agama Jawa.

Central Java is home to one of the world's great Buddhist monuments – Borobudur. It is Indonesia's most visited tourist attraction and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Borobudur is also a place of pilgrimage and once a year, Indonesian Buddhists gather there to celebrate Waisak (Vesakha) – Buddha's birthday.

You can see Borobudur in a beautiful black and white photograph in littleBstudio's Etsy shop:[0]=tags&includes[1]=title
