Item details

Simple tote bag pattern suitable for beginners.

These instructions will take you step-by-step through the process of making a simple, unlined shoulder bag.

There are many patterns on Etsy for gorgeous shoulder bags that are lined, interlined, quilted, or pleated, and which have clasps, pockets, bells and whistles. This is not such a bag, but it is a practical, functional, everyday bag, that is also very easy to make. If you are looking for a beginner sewing project, and/or you don't have the time or space to lay out your sewing equipment to tackle an extended project, then this is the pattern for you.

I keep one of these bags permanently in my handbag, for all the times I forget to take my weightier bags out with me!

I pride myself on writing in a friendly, jargon-fee manner, and the instructions are fully illustrated with line drawings. If you have any difficulties, I'm more than happy to answer questions by e-mail.

This is such a useful bag, and the instructions help you to make it so quickly, that it will pay you back time and again. The instructions are written specifically with the time-strapped and frugal in mind. Details about how to source second-hand fabric are given, but of course you can use a new fabric of your choice.

The bag is ideal made from a relatively lightweight fabric, so that it can be folded up small enough to keep in your handbag or pocket – much handier than many reusable bags on the market!

Fabric choices are detailed in the instructions to enable you to make a bag that is easy-to-sew and washable. Appropriate fabric is easy to find and cheap. These factors make this an ideal project for children and other beginner sewers.

What you will need:
- Fabric (equivalent to 60cm / 24" of 110cm / 42" wide fabric)
- Ordinary cotton or polyester sewing thread
- A sewing needle
- A few pins
- A tape measure or ruler
- Sharp scissors
- A sewing machine (this is optional - there's no reason why you can't sew this bag by hand, although it's obviously quicker by machine)

The instructions include information on how to alter the size/shape of the bag to your own preferences, plus how to customise it should you wish to.

If you'd like to offer this pattern to someone as a gift, I can provide it printed and presented in a smart, eco-friendly gift package. Just use the "Request a custom order" link above to contact me, with no obligation.

For a short-handled, sturdy grocery bag with a flat bottom, please see my other listing here:

CANCELLING YOUR ORDER – Physical Items ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You have the right to cancel an order at any time from the moment you place the order until 14 days from the day you receive your goods.

This 14 day period is the time you have to decide you wish to cancel and get in touch with me. Once you have got in touch about cancelling an order, you then have a further 14 days in which to return the goods if they have been dispatched.

The Consumer Contracts Regulations does not give you the right to cancel an order for personalized, customized and tailor-made items, but please contact me anyway if you have any issues at all, and we'll work it out together.

CANCELLING YOUR ORDER – Digital Items ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Specific provisions exist in the Consumer Contracts Regulations for digital content.
If you are ordering a digital item, by agreeing to these terms and conditions you are giving your express consent for me to supply you with your digital item within the 14-day cancellation period. (If you did not consent to this, I would have to wait 14 days before providing you with the digital item, to allow you your right to cancel).

Returns & exchanges

RETURNS & REFUNDS ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you wish to return items (this hasn't happened yet!) I'm happy to refund the purchase price plus postage and packing costs, provided the items are returned in perfect (resellable) condition. Here's how it works:

If you wish to return something, you must get in touch with me within 14 days of receiving it. You can do this using the Returns & Refunds Form on my website here: www.littleconkers.co.uk/Little_Conkers/contact-little-conkers or just contact me with the relevant information.

I will process your refund (of the purchase price plus my standard postage and packaging cost) within 14 days of receiving the returned items, provided they are returned in resellable condition.

If you paid for an upgraded delivery service, this will not be refunded in full - I will only refund the amount of my standard postage and packaging service.

A deduction will be made from the refund if the value of the item(s) has been reduced as the result of excessive handling, carelessness or any other reason.

In returning items, you will need to pay for the return postage yourself. I strongly advise that you obtain a certificate of posting (at a minimum) from your Post Office or courier, as if the item is lost in transit you will need to be able to claim for compensation.

If you are returning items to me from outside the United Kingdom, you must mark the package prominently as "Returned Goods". If you don't do this, I will unfortunately have to deduct any customs fees/tax/brokerage charges from the amount I can refund you.

Digital items cannot be returned.
