Have you ever heard of polymer clay canes? These intricate handmade supplies are made by combining different colors of clay to create a long snake or “cane” that you can slice to reveal a pattern or motif. The best part? You can buy them pre-made by talented clay artists, and use them to create all sorts of DIY projects – from earrings and ring dishes to belt buckles and brooches. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to work with polymer clay canes to create a one-of-a-kind light switch cover that you’ll admire every time you turn on the light. Let's get started.

You will need

You might already have

Metal light switch cover

Step 1: Roll out base clay

Roll out a small package of polymer clay to ⅛ in. / 3 mm. thickness. The clay should be about the same size as your light switch cover. This will be the base clay that you’ll adhere your clay cane slices to.

Step 2: Leave an impression of your light switch cover

Set your light switch cover over the top of your base clay. Press down firmly, so that you leave an impression of the shape on your clay. Carefully remove light switch cover.

Step 3: Slice your polymer clay canes

Use a clay blade to slice your polymer clay canes in an even, downward motion. Your clay slices should be about 1 mm. thick.

Step 4: Arrange clay slices onto your base clay

Place your clay slices on top of your base clay, starting from the center. Use whatever design you prefer; don’t be afraid to mix and match. The more clay slices you add from different polymer clay canes, the more original your look. Tip: Avoid positioning your favorite clay slices in the middle of your base clay – you're going to cut that area out later to accommodate your light switch.

Step 5: Roll out your design to an even thickness

Use a clay roller to roll out your design to an even thickness. This will bond the clay slices to each other, and to your base clay. Tip: If the clay sticks to your work surface, gently remove with your clay blade.

Step 6: Place clay design onto light switch cover

Place your flattened clay design onto your light switch cover. Gently press into place, so the design is centered.

Step 7: Cut out a hole for your light switch

Use your index finger to find the switch hole in your light switch cover. Cut it out with a utility knife.

Step 8: Trim around the edges

Use your utility knife to trim around the edges of your light switch. Leave a small border slightly larger than the light switch cover so you can tuck the clay neatly around the back.

Step 9: Attach screws

Use your index finger to find the screw holes in your light switch cover. Punch screws through clay, being sure to press them all the way through.

Step 10: Fold edges around the light switch cover

Flip your light switch cover over. Gently pull the edges of clay towards the back, so they’re tucked around neatly. Use your utility blade to trim as needed.

Step 11: Bake

Bake your light switch cover according to the directions on your polymer clay packaging.
All done! Now you can install your colorful new light switch cover to the wall. Nice job!
