Whether you want to breathe new life into an old pair of jeans or take a pair of heels from basic to bold, fabric trim is all you need to create a completely customized closet. Start with a sampling of fabric trim – think pom poms, mirrored ribbon, daisy chain appliques, and oversized ric rac for a touch of the avant garde – then grab your wardrobe staples, a needle and thread and start sewing. Below, you’ll find 7 ideas to get your style gears turning.

Wardrobe staples (jeans, tee shirts, simple shoes and accessories)

1. Add appliques

Sew daisy trim onto the edge of your pockets for a floral refresh.

2. Sew on oversized ric rac

Oversized ric rac adds a high-fashion twist to basic black. Choose thread in the same color as the trim and hand sew onto a dress or romper.

3. Make a decorative band for your hat

Wrap a length of ribbon or trim around the crown of a favorite hat and secure in place with hot glue or a needle and thread.

4. Glam up your pocket

Add a touch of glam by sewing mirrored ribbon to the pockets of your jeans or pants.

5. Re-do your shoes

Make a masterpiece from an inexpensive or no longer worn pair of shoes by adding pom pom trim to the ankle strap and mirrored ribbon to the toe strap.

6. Add pom poms to your pockets

Pom poms add pizzaz to pockets, hems, seams and more. Glue or sew on pom pom trim for instant excitement.
