From knitted sculpture to lighting design and beyond!
I've been making since I could hold a pair of scissors! I studied Textile design at Central St Martins School of Art and specialising in Knitting, I saw huge potential for this technique. My degree show included fashion, millinery, jewellery and sculpture. Following a commission of 75 chainmail style knitted hangings for Wallis' Christmas window displays, I put a light bulb in one of these hangings and accidentally became a lighting designer! I developed a range of Knitted Chandeliers that caught the design savvy shoppers' imaginations and soon found myself doing trade shows from London to San Francisco. Harvey Nichols and Liberty's were some of my first customers with numerous independent stores around the world. John Lewis followed and soon they were asking me to design exclusive ranges for their 30+ branches. I grew from one man band to employing over 20 knitters and stitchers and several factories. Aside from lighting, I have always worked on bespoke commissions including artwork for window displays, theatre and advertising - examples from The Royal Caribbean cruise liners to The Old Vic Theatre can be seen on my website: extraordinarydesign.com. My success has led me to coach and mentor both up and coming designer-makers and mid-life career changers - a very rewarding experience. I've been privileged enough to work in Cambodia guiding locals with product development for the European market. I'm a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and the Royal Society of Arts
