It's not a hobby, it's an "addiction".
Like all addictions, it started out small. A garnet crystal here, an amethyst here, some tourmaline there. I was totally in control for a couple of years, quite content with faceting; until I met Friday Nelson at a craft show.
Friday is lapidary and wire wrapper. As I looked through all his jewelry cases (8) , I was amazed at the variety of materials he had on display. It was an A to Z list of gem material.
That was it for me!! I started buying used lapidary equipment, old collections and LOTS of rocks. I learned how to cut and polish cabochons on a second hand grinder, from slabs I cut on a second hand saw.
Now, that might not sound too bad , YET! But, the thing is, equipment requires room. And did I forget to mention ROCKS!
When you buy a couple of hundred pounds of rock at a time, you also need room for that. I had rocks everywhere!!!
Fast forward to the present: In addition to cutting stones, I have been working in gold and silver for a number of years. I am currently in the process of opening my 3rd Etsy shop, PHMDesigns, for my jewelry.
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Wearer Of ALL The Hats!
I started cutting for craft and gem shows in 1995 after discovering I already had much more rock in my house than my wife was happy about! ("TOO MANY ROCKS"!!!)
