Inspired by history and nature; created for the modern stitcher
I began creating my own designs when I couldn't quite find what I was looking for in shops and online. My main inspirations are Celtic art and the natural world but anything could inspire me to create a design.
I usually start with sketches on plain paper before transferring the idea onto squared paper. I then complete the design on specialised software. It is important to me to be the first person to stitch my designs. Not only does this give me the privilege of having something unique (albeit briefly!) but it also allows me to check that I am happy with every part of it before putting it on sale.
I work from home in Derbyshire and as my desk is right by the window, I can't help but be distracted by the lively birds outside and I always keep my binoculars to hand. There is a hawthorn tree in the middle of the garden and this is what inspired my business name. It also reminds me how closely connected to nature our ancestors were, like the Celtic tribe who once lived on Derbyshire's Mam Tor.
I love the process of taking an idea and translating it in to threads and fabric, especially when it involves a design which has its origins several centuries ago. Many of my Celtic designs are inspired by artwork which is over a thousand years old. By simplifying them and choosing a modern colour palette these designs are given new life.
I have many more ideas so do keep checking the shop to see my new additions. You can get in touch my finding me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can also read more about my designs and inspirations on my blog: hawthorntreeneedlecraft.blogspot.co.uk
Thank you for visiting!
I live in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire. I'm a history graduate who loves nature. Seeing the world through a designer's eyes, I find inspiration everywhere! Some of my designs are based on art which is over a thousand years old.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalised orders
I do not currently accept custom orders but I am happy to accept suggestions for patterns, especially birds. Please get in touch if you have a favourite bird you'd like me to design.
Do you sell completed cross stitch items?
Cross stitch is a very time-consuming form of embroidery and unfortunately this means that making larger cross stitched items to sell is not practical; they would simply be too expensive. However, I do make small cross stitched items such as ornaments and greeting cards. See my shop sections for details.
Are your patterns compatible with embroidery machines?
All patterns are currently only designed for hand embroidery and are only available in PDF format.
Will there be any more bird designs?
Yes! Birds are one of my favourite subjects and I'll definitely be adding more over time. If you favourite my shop you will receive updates every time I add something new. Do you have a favourite bird you'd like me to design? Send me a convo and I'll do my best to make it happen!
What should I do if I'm having trouble downloading a file?
This page in the Etsy help section has solutions to common problems with digital downloads.
If you are still experiencing problems, get in touch with me and I'll see if I can help. I also recommend you contact Etsy as they may be in a better position to solve the problem.
