Hello dear guest!
Before heading on to the story, see the news :
Since March 2017, I add a manufacturer to my family, a real business partner, the Malfroy enterprise. I bring in the designs and the story behind them and Mr Malfroy brings the long experience of a 3 generation enterprise in the fabric industry, the know-how of printing on silk. The purpose of this collaboration is to invest in a French local business, to propose you a unique and stylish product and to improve my production conditions (20 minutes by car from the plant). Less transport time, more face to face communication is how Minunat by Irina tries to be a correct business. Enjoy !!!
I am Irina, the creator behind “Minunat by Irina”. Born in Romania some 35 years ago, I live in France since 2004, in Lyon. I am an engineer and mother of two girls.
I was born in a communist country and as far as I remember, clothes and home accessories were created in my family. Both my grandmothers, my mom and one aunty were accomplished in embroidery, sewing, knitting and crochet. They created complete wardrobes and countless decorating items because those times the shops were empty and because it was just natural to make beautiful things. They had skills and know-how and this was our tradition. These women in my family did not teach me the « how to » but they did put this idea in my mind : whenever you take the time to make something that will correspond to your needs more than anything you can buy, you have the choice and power to use precious fabric and create a fine object that will last and that you can enjoy for a long time.
While growing up, I did some sewing and knitting but only when I became a mom, I started to made things precisely adapted to my needs, things that can suffer sustained effort while being unique. By this time, I started to ask myself 10000 other questions mostly regarding my identity. As an expat, I spent my time between France and Romania. After 10 years of enjoying the best and worst of these countries, I noticed how the beautiful things I came across everywhere I traveled filled me with emotion and with a need of something I could not describe. Fabrics, patterns, scraps of images seen in museums, colors, folk clothes, old objects, embroidery, traditional ceramics, wood carvings, they all resonated with something inside me.
Naturally, at first the Romanian folk made the strongest impression on me. I felt the need to surround myself with its beauty but I did not want to just copy a folk motif on a daily object. And so, I started drawing vegetal and animal representations from an ancient rugs book. I discovered the challenge of putting on a paper what I had in mind.
This is how I first drew « Maiastra », an ancient Romanian motif of a charmed bird. Enchanted by this motif I wanted to print it on fabric, make it come to live in this way. I chose linen as my canvas and block printing. And this was my first piece of printed fabric carrying the precious motif of eternal rejuvenation. I felt that I must give a name to this something that I created. And my feeling was that a Romanian a word that my husband divinely pronounces will do. And so «Minunat» (or «Wonderful» in English) by Irina was born.
Soon after this exciting beginning it was clear that it was impossible to block print fabric myself while working during the day and carrying for my family. I started looking for printing houses and thinking about how to make this idea I had come to life. I knew that I was looking for small European printing houses, as my wish is to start a long-term collaboration and I hope to even get to personally visit and meet them. I found two such printing houses, one in Italy – a new team in a large company grown from a family business - and one in Poland – two courageous young ladies which propose fabrics from verified Polish producers and the best eco-friendly inks.
I wished to stick to simple colors, similar to those derived from vegetable dyes, or even just to the traditional use of red and black. But my ideas evolved and I decided to keep a white background, an elegant canvas for my interpretations of the traditional symbols : beautiful fabric printed with folk inspired symbols, a bond with the past through design.
