Piccalilli Patchwork.....items to relish by natalie jo
When I was three years old I spent a fair share of time with my grandmother and her crafty ways. I was especially fond of her button box and the itty bitty fabric samples she often received in the mail. Eventually she made those scraps over into a patchwork skirt which was gifted to me on my fifth birthday. I loved it so much I wore it for several more birthdays to come until the poor thing could not be wiggled around my waist any longer and it disappeared deep into the attic. My love of fabrics patched together, however, was permanently embedded in me.
Today that little patchwork skirt has happily re-emerged and been made into a sewing machine cover for Betty, my Singer Featherweight 221. Having taken over the hall at the top of the stairs and dubbed it my sewing nook, Betty (and the skirt) now have a permanent home!
Tiny stitches taken in stolen moments are a daily habit and one that I eagerly look forward to. Equally entertaining is "fabric play" in which all sorts of color and print combinations are laid out for debate. It's amazing how many delicious fabrics there are out there and I half wonder if I don't keep my projects small scale in order to give them all a try!
