As a little girl, I was taught to knit by my very patient Irish grandmother and to sew by my mother, who made many of her clothes and those worn by myself and my two younger brothers. I loved to play with fabrics and wool making clothes for my dolls and then in time, myself and then my two daughters, teaching myself to hand-smock for them. I also loved to create jewellery.
The birth of my third child and first son in 1990 inspired me to start a children's clothing company, Little Treasures. For many years, we have produced beautiful clothes for children, for everyday, for bedtime, for special occasions and for weddings, with emphasis on quality and attention to fine detail, such as hand-smocking and embroidery.
With my four little muses, my two daughters and two sons, long grown up, I felt that it was time to make some changes, starting with my business' name. As a family, we are rather crazy about dogs, (we share our home with 5 Spaniels), and the name Tilly Charles is a combination of the names of two of our late Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, our Blenheim Tilly and our tri-colour, Charles.
Whilst my main business is now selling the beautiful Liberty and other fabrics that I love (many of which we continue to use to make our items), we continue to make a selection of accessories and a small selection of clothing.
My design inspiration comes from many sources, from a walk in the woods or by the sea with the dogs; from my collection of vintage sewing patterns and needlecraft books; from other items that I love and collect; even from something as simple as the colours of two skeins of embroidery thread randomly thrown together. We proudly design and make our items ourselves in the UK, continuing our tradition of quality and attention to detail. We cut our own patterns, then individually and lovingly hand-craft all our items for you; nothing is mass-produced.
