From our Forest to Your Home
The Birkemeier family farm is just 15 minutes from the charming village of Spring Green, WI. With over 200 acres of beautiful hardwood trees, easy rolling hills and cliffs that Native Americans once took shelter in, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the beauty of this Driftless Region paradise.
A forester by trade, Jim Birkemeier knew there was a better way to manage natural timberland rather than have the DNR clear cut it every 30-50 years; and so 40 years ago, Spring Green Timber Growers began. Adopting the ways of the Menominee tribe in northeastern WI, Jim and his timber team take only what the forest gives them in dead and dying trees. This way, the healthy trees can grow vigorously and live as long as they were meant to.
The trees are taken out of the forest with minimal equipment so as not to disturb the forest ground, milled onsite and dried in one of three solar-cycle kilns. Once dried to the correct moisture level, the wood is processed in the 100 year old dairy barn on the property. The same barn houses Jim's 80 something mother's greenhouse as well as all of the equipment needed for the wood.
Thin boards are made out of walnut, cherry, maple, oak, ash, pine & basswood for the workshop in town. That's where your custom ornaments and gifts are made with care and precision. The team also makes (and installs) flooring, furniture, cabinetry and pretty much all things wood.
Spring Green Timber Growers is the proud recipient of Earth Day's 2015 Most Sustainable Small Business in WI. The waste wood is used to heat Jim & his parent's home at the farm and the wood shavings from the mill are picked up by local animal owners for bedding. Jim & the team continually strive to learn and become even more sustainable.

Q: What do I need to know about laser cutting limitations prior to design?
A: Lasers are very specialized and expensive tools that perform intricate and precision cutting. It is really basically a very fancy scroll saw. Think about a band saw vs a table saw vs a reciprocating saw... they all can cut wood, but the project dictates the tool.
Q: What wood thicknesses are you limited to?
A: 3/8" hardwood, assuming no knots and other factors, we usually are cutting wood that is 3/16" thick.
Q: What overall dimensions can your equipment produce as one piece? Technically... 36" x 24" ... Realistically, 24" x 18".
Q: What type of electronic files do you need to make your production the easiest?
A: Acceptable file formats for cutting are Adobe Illustrator CS3 or less (.ai), Acrobat (.pdf), Corel Draw X4 or less (.cdr), or basic .eps files.
Q: How do you charge, is it by the thickness and the overall length of cutting done by the equipment?
A: We charge for setup time for jobs, and by the cutting time of the project. Ultimately however, there are many factors to this equation. Ultimately both thickness and cut length as well as complexity dictate the price.
Q: What is the cut edge like?
A: Almost sharp, and zero tearout, the wood is actually being vaporized by the laser. The result is some fuming residue on the top of the board and some smoke "reflections" on the bottom. Generally it is quite smooth, we however sand many of our finished products to remove the black edge resulting from the burning of the wood.
Q: Does the edge always burn?
A: Yes, that is the basis of how the laser functions, it burns/vaporizes the wood leaving a blackened resinous kerf.
