My first love is social history, particularly the everyday lives of Welsh women during the ‘long nineteenth century’. I’m still hoping to write that ‘magnum opus’! However, much of my life has been spent working in archives and libraries, researching and curating historic collections of various types
My days are now spent curating and cataloguing items from my own collections (a much overdue exercise) and passing many of them on to their new custodians. I am astounded at how many items I have managed to accumulate over the years. Many of them will appear in my various etsy shops so stay tuned for yet more ‘fripperies’ ….

I strive to be fair and approachable in all my dealings with my customers. I want you to be delighted with your purchase so, should any problem arise, please contact me at once and I will do my best to put things right. I value my reputation as an Etsy seller and my relationship with my customers. However, I am only human and may occasionally make a genuine mistake! Please allow me the opportunity to resolve any issues to our mutual satisfaction. In particular, it would be much appreciated if you could please contact me before leaving negative feedback. Unless I am made aware of a problem, I can’t take steps to resolve it.
Accepted payment methods
Please note that you do not need to have a Paypal account to pay via Paypal (you may use your credit card instead when checking out via Paypal).
Paypal, Etsy Payments or Etsy Gift Cards are the ONLY methods of payment that I accept from non-UK buyers.
I will consider other forms of payment (such as a sterling cheque drawn on a UK bank) from UK buyers but please contact me first to discuss. The goods will not be despatched until the cheque has cleared.
I reserve the right to refuse to ship an item to an unconfirmed address or to an address other than that stated on the transaction (not usually a problem for smaller purchases but it may be an issue with higher value items).
I reserve the right to only accept payment via Paypal under certain circumstances (e.g. for higher value transactions or in cases where the buyer lives in a country which has a high incidence of postal loss etc)
Please pay for the item within 3 days of purchasing. If this is likely to pose problems, please contact me to discuss. I am able to reserve items if required, but reserve the right to re-list the item if payment is not received within 3 days.
The Royal Mail estimated delivery time within Europe is 3-5 working days, outside Europe 5-7 working days (though delivery to some countries can sometimes take considerably longer and there are usually delays during the 'Christmas rush')
Goods will usually be despatched within 3 days of receiving payment (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays) although it may take longer during busy periods such as Christmas/New Year or if there is an unforeseen emergency. Please check my Shop Announcement section for updates. I will also send a message to confirm despatch.
Please note that item(s) will usually be shipped to the name and address registered on your Etsy/Paypal account(s), as applicable, so please ensure that this information is up to date before sending payment
** I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE SHIPPING COSTS ** up to a total combined weight of 2 KG for any single package when shipping overseas - providing it is safe and practicable to do so (i.e. providing items can be packed in the same packaging). This will usually result in a considerable saving on shipping costs, particularly for lighter items. However, please be aware that there will be instances where this will not be the case - or where the saving may not be as much as you had hoped (e.g. in the case of very heavy items or if the increased value of a package requires significant additional insurance cover). If you require clarification prior to purchasing - or reserving - an item, please contact me.
Please purchase your items in the usual manner. I will then calculate any combined shipping discount that may apply and issue a prompt refund via Paypal for this amount.

Purchases within the UK will normally be sent by First Class post (with higher value items being sent via a ‘Signed For’ trackable method). Heavier packages are sometimes sent via Second Class post (this will usually be mentioned in the listing) - if you require it more urgently please contact me to discuss. International purchases will be sent via Airmail (again, with higher value items being sent via the International ‘Signed For’ service).
If you require additional insurance or guaranteed next day delivery (UK only for next day delivery), please contact me so that I can invoice you for the extra amount. In some cases, particularly for larger value items, insurance will already have been included in the shipping charges quoted in the item description. Please contact me should you require clarification.
Please note that I often have to estimate shipping costs within the item description (particularly for additional purchases - where it can be difficult to predict the final weight of a package). If, when I come to weighing the item(s) prior to despatch, I find that I have grossly overestimated the shipping costs (after allowing a small amount for packaging) I will refund the difference
Please note that the shipping charges quoted do NOT include any taxes, customs fees etc that may be charged when the item is imported into your own country/state (should indeed they apply). You the buyer are solely responsible for any such charges and for importing the goods from the United Kingdom into your country/state. You the buyer are responsible for ensuring that the goods comply with the customs/import regulations in your own country so please do not purchase any goods that infringe those regulations. I cannot provide a refund for any goods that may be confiscated by customs unless they are returned to me.
Delivery times can vary. Airmail post within Europe usually takes 3-5 working days, outside Europe around 5-7 working days. Please be aware, however, that international shipping to some countries can take from 2-6 weeks (and that delays can often be the result of lengthy customs procedures within your own country). Unfortunately I have no control over any such delays!
Please contact me if your parcel does not arrive within a reasonable timeframe (after making allowances for any international shipping/customs delays). Non-delivery is extremely rare but, should this happen, a full refund will be given. Please note, however, that I cannot issue a refund until the package is either safely returned to me or sufficient time has elapsed for Royal Mail to deal with the insurance claim. Depending on where you reside, this can be several weeks after initial posting.
If your package is damaged on receipt please contact me immediately and retain the original packaging for possible inspection by the relevant shipping company.
Please note that I cannot refund shipping costs on packages that are returned to me as undelivered or uncollected
Please note that I cannot be held responsible for any consequential loss caused by late delivery, damage in transit or failure to deliver by Royal Mail and/or any other appointed carrier. Liability is limited to the value of the item(s) purchased.
Packaging: textiles and garments are despatched in new strong plastic mailing bags. Patterns and other paper ephemera are despatched in new hard-backed envelopes. As regards other types of packaging, I try to recycle as much as possible in order to reduce costs as well as the impact on the environment. In particular, I almost always use recycled cardboard boxes for three-dimensional objects. If you would like me to post your item in a new cardboard box, please let me know and I will do my best to oblige (subject to availability).

I appreciate that it can be difficult to gauge the suitability of an item from a photograph – so, if the item does not meet your expectations, please contact me to arrange a refund.
I offer a ‘no quibble’ returns policy, subject to the conditions stated below:
If you wish to return an item, please notify me within 14 days of receipt and return the item within 14 days of notifying me. A refund cannot be given until the item is safely received by me.
The refund (or exchange if applicable) is dependent on the safe receipt of the item by me (complete, unused and in the condition in which it was originally sent to you), so you are advised to use a trackable and/or insured method of shipping and to package carefully (using the packaging in which the item was originally sent - or equivalent).
Unfortunately, I am often unable to refund the initial shipping costs (this is dependent on individual circumstances – e.g. if the item has been misdescribed). Please note too that RETURN shipping costs are the buyer’s responsibility.
Additional policies and FAQs
Minor blemishes which are commensurate with age and prior usage - and which are not immediately noticeable - will not necessarily be referred to within the item description. However, more significant defects (such as noticeable stains or repairs) will always be mentioned so please read the description carefully before you purchase. I am always happy to supply further information should you require it.
Most items that can be washed without the risk of damage will be laundered before being placed on sale. Others (e.g. those that require dry cleaning or other specialist cleaning) will not necessarily be cleaned prior to sale. In the case of particularly old or fragile items I think it preferable to allow you the buyer to decide on your preferred method of cleaning (or otherwise, as the case may be).
Please be aware that most vintage/antique items should not be subjected to harsh modern cleaning methods and that cleaning (and/or restoration) is undertaken at the buyer's own risk.
SIZING OF VINTAGE GARMENTS:
Please be aware that vintage dress sizes (as printed on original garment labels) usually run smaller than current dress sizes.
When finished garments are placed on sale in my etsy shops, detailed measurements are usually provided within the item description. It is important that you check the actual measurements provided and compare them with a well-fitting garment that you already own. Measurements are usually taken with the garment laid flat unless stated otherwise.
I usually provide an estimate as to how these measurements convert to current dress/shoe sizes (in the UK, US and Europe). However, I must emphasise that it is precisely that - an ESTIMATE. The information is provided in good faith and is intended as a general guide only. Once again, it is important that you check the precise measurements given to ensure a good fit.
I am always happy to provide additional information/measurements that will assist with fit if required.
VINTAGE KNITTING/CROCHET/SEWING PATTERNS: most of my patterns are UK patterns and will be sized accordingly (i.e. using imperial measurements).
Please be aware that vintage dress sizes – as printed on vintage sewing patterns - were usually considerably smaller than those in use today. Please work to the specific measurements given on the pattern rather than the quoted dress size.
My vintage knitting and crochet patterns, unless stated otherwise, will be UK patterns using UK needle/pin and crochet hooks sizes (especially those patterns produced prior to c.1970, when metric sizes became the norm) as well as UK knitting and crochet abbreviations. Adjustments may therefore need to be made by international knitters/crocheters. If you are not currently famiilar with the old UK sizes and abbreviations you are advised to consult one of the many online resources that provide clarification or size conversions.
Please be aware too that vintage knitting yarns were usually thicker (and therefore heavier) than their modern equivalents. It is therefore important to work a tension/gauge square before commencing the garment to ensure a good fit. In most cases, you will also need to purchase more yarn than stated on the pattern.
I often convert sizes in my listings (e.g. from old imperial UK knitting needle sizes to current metric or US equivalents) for your convenience. This information is provided in good faith – and to the best of my ability - but I cannot accept responsibility for its accuracy. You are advised to verify this information yourself before commencing a garment (e.g. by working a tension/gauge square).
None of my patterns have been tested/made-up by myself and I am therefore unable to vouch for - or accept responsibility for - their accuracy.
I should also add that vintage patterns are often not the best choice for a novice knitter/needleworker. For instance, vintage knitting patterns often contain errors and you may need to draw upon your own experience as a knitter. If you have never worked from vintage patterns before, you are advised to consult one of the many internet sites that provide useful guidance on the subject before commencing your chosen project.

COLOUR: I make every effort to reproduce colours accurately in my photographs. However, please be aware of the limitations of colour digital photography and of personal monitor settings: the colours are not always ‘true’.
Please note too that any 'props' that may be included in my photographs for decorative effect are not included in the purchase. If in doubt as to what is included in the purchase, please refer to the item description and title or contact me for clarification.
ALLERGIES: all my items come from a smoke-free environment. However, I do have pets. Although I make every effort to keep my pets away from any items that are for sale, please be aware of this if you are acutely allergic to animals.
